Last year when I saw cropped tops in magazines, I thought for sure it would be a fad that would fade away quickly. However, I was wrong because it was all over the runways for fall. I can’t believe that the designers decided to bring this style back! I’m going to show my age here, but I remember Rachel wearing cropped shirts on Friends, and I didn't even like it, even then. Or what about 90210? I will admit that 90210 was one of my favorite shows. Who wouldn’t love to live with little parental supervision and have an unlimited supply of money?? Everyone seemed to love wearing the crop tops on the show. Even Steve Sanders liked to sport one every once in a while!
Fast forward about 20 years. I still don’t like crop tops, but I think about it in a different way. I know it's in style again. But, when I consider buying clothes now, I always ask myself, “Is this something I would want my daughters to wear when they are older?” If the answer is no, I will not purchase it. Sorry, I know that’s not fun to hear, but that’s the way it goes in our house.
That doesn't mean that crop tops are completely out of the question. Even though I don’t want to show a little or a lot of belly when I’m not on the beach, there are still ways to add the look to your wardrobe. Here are some options I have found:
Obviously, the easiest way to get the look without showing the world your midriff is to layer a crop top over a contrasting tank top or t shirt, like the blue top above. You can also dress the look up a bit by going with something a little dressier and wearing it over a pair of higher waisted pants or a higher waisted skirt. Either option is great. In either case, you can embrace this trend, and look great doing it, without channeling your inner Steve Sanders!
