Last blog post we started a two part series on items every woman should have in her closet, the answer to one of those common questions. Every woman wants to know what are the essential pieces that she needs to have in her closet. Here is the list we started last time to refresh your memory:
#1 Day-to-evening dress
#2 Black pants
#3 A Good T-Shirt
#4 A Nice Blouse
#5 Statement Jacket
Now, we will close the loop with a discussion of four more essential pieces. Knowing that every woman’s wardrobe is personal and her needs are largely determined by her lifestyle, these items do tend to transcend that and are more broadly applicable for all of us. So without further ado, here we go:
#6 A Good Sweater (pull-over or cardigan)
A sweater is a way you can introduce some color to your wardrobe. Get one in a color that you love. If you are not a person who loves color, try a camel, grey or even black. We say good, because you want it to be a fabric that will hold up over many wears. Cashmere is an example of a fabric that will last. A crewneck or V-neck is a good choice for versatility. A bateau neck is also very classic, but it doesn’t offer as many options for layering underneath as the crew or V-neck. Of course, you can always go with a cardigan too, because it gives you versatility of leaving it opened, buttoned up or even belted.
#7 A Good Pair of Jeans
We encourage every woman to take the time to go to a store where a knowledgeable salesperson can help her find a pair of jeans in the best style and fit for her figure. It is time and money well spent. It’s overwhelming to try and navigate jean shopping by yourself, and you will probably leave frustrated. You want to work with someone who has a good understanding of the available styles and your shape. A good style for most women is a straight leg jean in a clean, dark wash. This is very versatile because it can be worn either casual or dressed up. If you don’t like a straight cut, another option is a slim bootcut. This is a more updated look with just a slight flare in the leg. Either way, we always suggest a clean, dark wash because that wash is timeless and is flattering on all shapes and sizes.
#8 Little Black Dress
We all know this one, but do we all have a little black dress in our closet? This is such an easy one to dress up or down and really can be worn for many, many years. Buy the right one and you will be pulling this dress out to wear for a long time. Among its many attributes is the fact that a great little black dress can transition seamlessly from day to evening.
#9 A Classic Skirt
A classic skirt is an essential piece for every woman because it can be paired with a lot of different tops to create either a casual look or a dressier look. The skirt does not have to be a specific style or color. Pick a classic style that is flattering on you. Think pencil skirt, slight A-line skirt or a little fuller pleated skirt. Find a color that will work with multiple pieces from your existing wardrobe. The length of the skirt is also flexible, so go with what looks best on you. A good guide on length would be from slightly above the knee to just below the knee.
So there you have it. Does this mean these are the only nine essential pieces? Definitely not. There are certainly other key pieces of clothing as well as accessories and shoes that are part of a well-balanced wardrobe, but having these pieces as a foundation will give you lots of flexibility and will make it easier for you to get the most out of your wardrobe.
