How to Care for Your Clothes

If you have read any our blogs or follow us on social media, you know one of the ways we like to help our clients is by helping them maximize their wardrobes. We want you to invest in foundational pieces that can last and build your wardrobe around those pieces. Do we think you need to splurge or invest in every piece? No way! But, we think if you invest in the right pieces, it makes it so much easier to work in the fun fashion pieces.  In the coming months, we will be doing some posts about essential pieces for every woman’s closet.

Right now, though, we want to address how you can take care of your clothes to make sure they last. We love The Laundress products. They are, without a doubt, the best way we have found to care for our clothes. That’s why we actually sell the products, because we wanted our clients and anyone else we know to have access to them.  We are going to highlight how we use some of their products to care for clothes.  And the below tips don’t work only with The Laundress products. If you have products you use that you already love, feel free to use those instead with the tips we provide.

1.       Use a delicate fabric wash to wash your nicer things.  We all have some of those shirts that are silky (more likely than not they are a poly blend rather than actual silk, but the same concepts apply).  Most of the labels say Dry Clean Only. We usually wash those pieces in the washing machine in a mesh laundry bag to protect them (the most delicate items, we hand wash) with a special wash, such as The Laundress Delicate Wash. Yes, we said we wash these Dry Clean Only things.  We promise you, it will make your clothes last longer if you take care of them this way as compared with dry cleaning them. And it really doesn’t take much time to wash them this way.  A delicate wash is much gentler on your clothes.  You will also save a lot of money because dry cleaning is a way more expensive! Of course, lay the items flat to dry or hang on a drying rack.  You don't want to put delicate clothes in the dryer.

2.       Always pretreat your white and light colored shirts with a stain solution under the arms.  You know how all of a sudden your t-shirts appear with pit stains?  This is because over time sweat and deodorant builds up, causing discoloration.  Laundry detergent is not enough to prevent this build-up.  The Laundress Stain Solution is great at preventing these stains when combined with the All Purpose Bleach Alternative.  We have found this far more effective than just regular bleach and the added bonus is it’s color safe so you don’t have to worry about ruining your clothes. If you stay on top of this and pre-treat, there is a good chance you can prevent these pesky stains all together. Erin has actually finally been able to treat her husband’s white dress shirts this way too.  Before, the bleach was taking its toll and causing the fabric to fray and wasn’t even able to fully remove the stains. Enter the Stain Solution and All Purpose Bleach Alternative and the problem has been solved!

3.        Wash your denim inside out and do not put it in the dryer.  You don’t need to, nor should you, wash your denim after each wear.  If you want to prevent color from fading, use The Laundress Denim Wash.  It’s formulated with a color guard and helps to keep the softness to your denim.  This has really helped to keep the color from fading in our denim.

4.        We all get frustrated when we get a new top and after one wear it has pills all over it.  This is not a quality issue. This happens when things rub against the fabric. There is no way to prevent this, but you can fix it. We used to use the little electric “depillars, but were never satisfied with them because they wouldn’t remove all of the pills.   Now we swear by The Laundress Sweater Comb. Yes, it works wonders on sweaters, but it’s perfect on knits too.  Use it before or after each wear and you will keep the pills under control. We recommend using after each wear because if you wait until you want to wear the article of clothing, you probably won’t have time to get to do it.

We’re hoping that some of these tips will help you take care of your clothes. Please feel free to contact TCS if you have other questions about the best way to properly care for your clothes or if you are interested in purchasing any Laundress Products. We love to help you maximize your wardrobe!
